Press Release

Pervasive 2005: International Conference held at the LMU, Munich, focuses on Pervasive Computing

Munich, 02. Mai 2005 - Pervasive Computing is the phenomenon of networked computer systems pervading our everyday environment in manifold ways. This fast increasing field of research attracts a growing number of scientists from diverse disciplines with the main focus on computer science. For the 3rd internationalen Konferenz ,Pervasive 2005', organized by the department ,Institut für Informatik' of the University of Munich (LMU), 300 scientists and researchers from all over the world will be welcomed. The main conference will be held from 9. to 10. of May at the Hotel Maritim. At

9. May 2005,
Hotel Maritim,
Goethestrasse 7, 80336 Munich

there will be a press conference with the organizers Albrecht Schmidt (LMU), Roy Want (Intel) and Hans-Werner Gellersen (Lancaster University). Subsequently all participants will have the opportunity to attend demonstrations and presentation of recent works, scientific results and prototypes. The presentations will be conducted by the respective researchers who will be available for questions and discussions.

Preceding the conference, there will be held an international doctoral colloquium in the rooms of the department 'Instituts für Informatik', Oettingenstrasse 67, 80538 Munich. After the main conference, there will be various workshops from the 11. May till 13. May 2005.

The participants will discuss advances of enabling technologies, present innovative and novel appliances and services and reflect on potentials as well as risks associated with the brave new world of Pervasive Computing.

A consequence of advances in technical development is the ubiquitous integration of networked computer systems in our physical environment. This evolution defines a new age of information science. Novel systems emerge, acting autonomously, gathering information from their environment and context, exchanging them with other components over networks and enable new forms of human-computer interaction. These building blocks form the base for future intelligent environments.

Systems capturing the usage context are able to provide services and information that are especially tailored to the user's needs. Computer systems begin to weave themselves more and more into the fabric of everyday life and integrate and interconnect themselves unobtrusively and invisibly into our world. They thereby enrich and augment the environment in which we live in. Various computers, communication devices, embedded systems and even everyday objects are augmented with integrated computing capabilities form access points to the digital world. Pervasive Computing bridges the gap between the physical and the digital world.
